Can I Use a Power Adapter with Lower Amperage?

Generally, NO. Using an underpowered adapter forces the power brick into continuous maximum load, resulting in severe heat, voltage drop, random restarts, or a blown internal fuse.

Why It Endangers the Power Adapter

A device rated for 12V 2.5A will try to pull 2.5A. If you connect a 12V 1.0A adapter, the adapter cannot fulfill the demand. The excess current demand causes internal transformer windings and switching transistors to overheat rapidly.

Symptom 1

Severe Overheating

The adapter becomes hot to the touch, potentially softening plastic and creating fire risks.

Symptom 2

Voltage Sag & Bootloops

The voltage drops from 12V down to 8V–9V, causing the device to freeze, crash, or endlessly reboot.
