1. The Four Parameters of Power Supply Compatibility
Whenever you connect a DC power adapter to an electronic device, four fundamental parameters determine whether it will work safely or cause irreversible destruction:
Must match exactly. A 12V device requires a 12V adapter.
Adapter capacity must be equal to or higher than device draw.
Positive and negative pin assignments must align strictly.
Outer barrel and inner center pin must seat snugly without loose play.
2. How to Read the Adapter Label
Every safety-certified power brick features an etched or printed specification label. Look specifically for the OUTPUT: specification.
The electrical push. Must match exactly what your device requires.
The maximum capacity. The adapter can provide equal or more amps than required.

3. Why Higher Amps Is Safe, But Higher Volts Destroys Devices
Amps Are Drawn (Capacity)
The amperage number on the adapter is a maximum limit. A 12V 5A adapter will only deliver 1.5A to a 12V 1.5A device. The power supply will run cool and stress-free.
Volts Are Pushed (Pressure)
Voltage is constant electrical force. Connecting a 19V adapter to a 12V circuit forces excess current across internal regulators, producing immense heat and blowing components.
4. Verifying Polarity
Direct Current (DC) requires a positive pole and a negative ground. Reversed polarity sends voltage backward through semiconductor gates and electrolytic capacitors.

5. Measuring Barrel Connectors
DC barrel connectors look nearly indistinguishable to the naked eye. The standard convention is Outer Diameter (OD) × Inner Pin Diameter (ID).
